The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002, to promote higher education in the field of Biotechnology. The Department offers a three year B.Sc., Degree Programme in Biotechnology, two year M.Sc., Degree Programme in Biotechnology, M.Phil., and Doctoral Programme leading to PhD., (FT/PT) in Biotechnology from the academic year 2007-2008. Currently the combined program has 155 students with 6 dedicated and qualified faculty members assisted by a technical staff member. The department has produced 7 UG and 20 PG University ranks. The faculty members in the department are actively involved in research in thrust areas such as Nanotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Algology, Microbial Biotechnology and Clinical Biochemistry. The research projects carried out are outcome-based addressing the current challenges and problems faced by the society. The faculty members, students and scholars actively participate and in conferences and seminars and present research papers. The research findings are published in Journals of high repute. The department has also deposited more than 50 gene sequence in National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), USA. The department periodically organizes conferences, workshops and guest lectures. The department has an excellent track record in placement. The department has four well established laboratories with instruments such as UV – Vis and Spectrophotometer, PCR, UV Transilluminator, BOD, Incubator, Fermentor, Hybridization oven, AGE, PAGE, Cold room facility etc.
By analyzing the components of living cells, biotechnologists are learning how to control, fix and modify them to the benefit of global society. Under graduation in Biotechnology furnishes the graduates with the science and engineering fundamentals to succeed in the emerging technology-driven biotech industry. The technologies in this industry have made a real impact on humanity including the creation and manufacture of products that help in the diagnosis and treatment of disease (e.g. the production of antibiotics, insulin, and safer recombination vaccines), and the provision of services to areas like healthcare, food, agriculture, energy and the environment.
Vision
- To help the students to reform industries and redefine lives, beginning with agriculture to pharmaceuticals, drug discovery to Nanotechnology, Biotechnology by creating platform for new products.
- To develop the department as a potential center for research in various disciplines of Biotechnology, Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics.
Mission
- To facilitate the development of new technologies and products based on the sole applications of the life science.
- To help the students acquire knowledge and skills, to comprehend and commercialize technologies and products.
NCAOR-GOA
The department conducts guest lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences based on themes and concepts founded in the field of modern technological researches in the areas related to biotechnology. SymBios, a national level symposium is a yearly gathering of experts in the field of bio sciences and offers the participants a chance to learn and to discuss their ideas with experts.
Beyond Academics
Scicote
SCIGOTE the Scientific gathering of technical emergent conducted on all Fridays. This programme is a union of young scientific minds is an online platform to encourage the young student minds to polish their science interests and ideas.
Bioscope
BIOSCOPE, a digital learning platform. It is one of the department’s initiatives to improvise learning experience facilitated by sharing the content that provides students with element of control over how they utilize digital platform productively. Every Wednesday, series of videos are shared and displayed with the students which encourages them to learn the concepts, scopes and applications of biotechnology.
Birthday Garden
The Department encourages the students and faculties to make their birthday as a memorable day with nature. The main motto of birthday garden is planting saplings in the department garden by the students and faculty members on their respective birthday to celebrate another year of life.
Soap Making
The Department of biotechnology facilitates the students to prepare the organic soap in the department. The main motto is to make the students as young entrepreneur. Frequent hands on training are conducted to the student’s communities for developing their professional skills and to start their own business as low investment home based entrepreneurship opportunities.
Mushroom Cultivation
The Department of biotechnology gives hands on training program on mushroom cultivation to the students. Training deals about mushrooms, their health properties and benefits, their cultivation, processing and how to run a mushroom production farm. More specifically, trainers need to learn about the various tasks involved in the whole process of mushroom cultivation, the various types of cultivation according to the various types of mushrooms, and the processing and transformation of cultivated mushrooms.
Organic Farming
The Department of Biotechnology initiated cultivation of medicinal plants through organic farming. The farming combines tradition, innovation and scientific technology. The motto is to maintain long term soil fertility, minimize the soil degradation, erosion and pollution, and optimize biological productivity and to promote a sound state of health.
Vermicomposting
The Department of Biotechnology gives training on vermicompost production to the students. The main objective of vermicomposting training is to produce organic manure of exceptional quality for the organically starved soil. Agricultural wastes, wastes from dairy and animal farms are usually dumped into at places resulting in a foul mess. By vermicomposting the agriculture waste, wastes from dairy and animal farms are utilized efficiently for organic farming and also help the students to make a value-added product.

The department of Biotechnology introduced the Add on course titled Nano medicine and Mushroom Cultivation in the year 2015 and 2019. It is a certificate course approved by Bharathiar University.
Nanomedicine
Nano medicine contains two papers: Fundamentals of Nano science and Introductory Nano biotechnology and Nano medicine. Nano medicine is at the forefront of modern healthcare. Nanoparticles offer a new platform for drug delivery that can extend the “patent life” of drugs, but also greatly increase the targeting and effectiveness of therapy.
Mushroom cultivation
Mushroom cultivation contains two theory papers such as Fundamentals of Biology and Mushroom Cultivation and one practical paper. The college has excellent facility for growing a wide range of edible fungi. After successful completion the students will be able to develop their self confidence and personal skill towards self-employment.
Vocational Courses
With the support from BSS vocational training Programmes, a one year course in Medical Lab Technology (MLT) and two years Diploma course in Medical lab Technology (DMLT) was offered during 2019-2020. These programmes are delivered through its Vocational and IT Education Institutes which are well established with sufficient modern infrastructure facilities and in-house training facilities.
