The department of Biotechnology came in to existence in the year 2008, to promote higher education in the field of Bio science. PG programs were introduced in the year 2002, M. Phil in the year 2004 and Ph.D. (FT/PT) in the year 2007. The untiring efforts of all the faculty members have enabled the students to achieve significant growth. They have received project grants of around Rs.2 lakhs from UGC. With respect to service, the faculty members have an exemplary record of participation in National and International organization, editing professional journals and reviewing grant proposals from regional and national organizations. The Biotechnology laboratories are well-equipped with excellent infrastructural facilities. The department is first to introduce certificate course in Nano medicine among the colleges affiliated to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The ongoing research projects include Microbial degradation, Entomology, Molecular parthenogenesis, Bioinformatics and Bio nanotechnology. The research outcomes of the department are well evidenced by the publication of several research papers in peer reviewed national and international journals with good impact factor. The department regularly organizes national level seminars, symposium, workshops and guest lectures.
By analyzing the components of living cells, bio technologists are learning how to control, fix and modify them to the benefit of global society.
Under graduation in Biotechnology furnishes the graduate with the science and engineering fundamentals to succeed in the emerging technology-driven biotech industry. The technologies in this industry have made a real impact on humanity including the creation and manufacture of products that help in the diagnosis and treatment of disease (e.g. the production of antibiotics, insulin, and safer recombination vaccines), and the provision of services to areas like healthcare, food, agriculture, energy and the environment.
- To help the students to reform industries and redefine lives, beginning with agriculture to pharmaceuticals, drug discovery to Nanotechnology, Biotechnology by creating platform for new products.
- To develop the department as a potential center for research in various disciplines of Biotechnology, Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics.
- To facilitate the development of new technologies and products based on the sole applications of the life science.
- To help the students acquire knowledge and skills, to comprehend and commercialize technologies and products.
“Bio envisage” and Activities
The department conducts guest lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences based on themes and concepts founded in the field of modern technological researches in the areas related to biotechnology. SymBios, a national level symposium is a yearly gathering of experts in the field of bio sciences and offers the participants a chance to learn and to discuss their ideas with experts.
